Heat pump supply and installation · Perth

The right heat pump, sized correctly, installed properly.

Most heat pumps are oversized, misplaced, or poorly integrated. A supplier sizes for the biggest possible load. A plumber puts it where it fits. Neither does the calculation first. We do the calculation first, then specify the unit – and our own team installs it.

The sizing problem

Oversized is not safe. It's expensive.

The default in the industry is to size up. Oversized sounds like a good problem to have – but it is not. A heat pump that is too large for its load short-cycles: it switches on, heats quickly, switches off, switches on again. Each start is the most energy-intensive moment in the cycle. More starts mean more energy, more wear, and a shorter life.

Undersized is the other failure: the unit runs all day, never reaches the set temperature, and your bill reflects a heat pump running flat out, all day, with no break.

Both failures are prevented by the same thing: a calculation before you buy.
The placement problem

Boxed in loses up to 50% efficiency.

A heat pump extracts heat from the air around it. Put it in a corner against two walls, or box it behind a fence, and it runs out of air to extract from – it effectively suffocates. Efficiency drops by up to 50%, and it never recovers unless it is moved.

We site the heat pump in the design, before walls go up or fences go in. That is the only time siting can be done without a costly re-route.

The heat pump needs to breathe. Design that in early or it never can.
Why the calculation comes first

Calculation first. Equipment selection second.

Most suppliers work the other way: they have a product range and they find something in it that is roughly the right size. We start with your building's actual load – calculated from plans, not guessed from floor area – and then select the unit that matches that load at the operating conditions your climate produces.

The difference matters because heat pumps are rated at standard conditions (usually 7°C outside air). A Perth July night averages about 8°C, but the mornings that matter drop to 2–4°C, colder in the hills and the south-west. We select the unit for those mornings, at the water temperature your system actually runs – not on a nominal kW rating on a data sheet.

We also integrate properly. A heat pump connected to a hydronic system needs to talk to the controls, send water out at the right temperature, and not fight the zoning – the separate thermostat areas. We design the whole system, not just the box that sits outside.

Hot water, pool or heating

Which heat pump job is yours?

Hot water

Replace your electric storage heater with a heat pump hot water unit. Efficiency of 300–400%, against about 100% from a standard electric element. The full story below →

Pool heating

A solar-synced pool heat pump runs on your surplus solar during the day, putting surplus solar into your pool instead of exporting it for 2 cents. Pool heating details →

Space heating (hydronic)

The heat source for a floor heating or radiator system is almost always a heat pump. We size and site it as part of the whole system design – not as an afterthought. Radiator systems →

If you have solar panels

A properly controlled heat pump can be scheduled or dynamically managed to run during your surplus solar export hours – turning the 2 cents a unit Synergy pays for midday exports (10 cents after 3 pm) into hot water or a warm pool instead. A timer does this poorly (it can't see when a cloud passes or the aircon kicks in). An intelligent controller does it properly. We specify and install the control logic as part of the installation, not as a retrofit thought.

Wondering about geothermal or heat recovery? Geothermal is a heat pump with a better energy source – and a much bigger bill for reaching it; sometimes that pays back, sometimes it never would. Heat recovery means two different things – a heat pump that reuses waste heat, or ventilation that keeps the warmth in the air it swaps. Switching your hot water to a heat pump

Electric hot water is probably costing you twice what it should.

If your hot water comes from an electric storage tank, every unit of heat costs you a full unit of electricity, plus what the tank loses overnight.

A heat pump hot water unit delivers three to four units of heat for each unit of electricity. It does this by extracting heat from the air around it – the same physics that makes a reverse-cycle aircon warm a room from outside air in winter.

Hot water heat pump installation

Replace your electric storage heater with a heat pump unit.

~100%
Efficiency of a standard electric element
300–400%
Efficiency of a heat pump hot water unit
23–25%
Typical share of home energy bill from hot water

If you have solar panels, the payback comes sooner. A heat pump hot water unit can be timed or controlled to run during your midday solar surplus – heating your water from the energy you're currently exporting for 2 cents per unit rather than buying it back at about 33 cents.

We install the Stiebel Eltron WWK 302H and comparable units. Government rebates and STCs (small-scale technology certificates) may apply – ask us about current availability when you enquire.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How do I know what size heat pump I need?
You need a calculation. For hot water, it depends on household size and daily usage. For space heating, it depends on the thermal load of the building – calculated from floor area, glazing, orientation, and insulation. For pools, it depends on pool volume and your target temperature. We calculate all three before specifying a unit. Do not trust a sizing tool that asks only for floor area or number of occupants – those are guesses, not calculations.
Where should a heat pump be installed?
Outdoors, with clear airflow. Behind and beside the unit, the maker's minimum – usually a few hundred millimetres. In front of the fan, at least 2 metres of open air, so the chilled exhaust drifts away instead of being breathed back in. Never boxed in behind a fence or between walls without an adequate airflow gap. The unit should not be in a basement, enclosed courtyard, or any space where it will recirculate the cold air it exhausts. We specify siting as part of every installation.
Can a heat pump run on solar power?
Yes, and this is one of the strongest arguments for a heat pump over a resistance heater. A heat pump running at 300% efficiency on surplus solar you're exporting for 2 cents is effectively producing heat at a fraction of the grid rate. The key is the control strategy – a simple timer is better than nothing, but an intelligent controller that reads actual solar surplus in real time is far better. We install and configure the control logic as part of the installation.
Do I need a plumber or an electrician?
Both. A heat pump hot water unit connects to your existing hot water plumbing and needs a dedicated electrical circuit – typically a 20A or 32A single-phase circuit depending on the model. We coordinate both as part of our installation. You do not need to manage two separate trades.
What brands do you install?
We work with Stiebel Eltron, Daikin, and comparable quality European and Japanese heat pump brands. We do not install cheap no-name units. Brand selection depends on the application, the required operating temperatures, and the control interface. We specify to the job, not to a fixed product list.

"Euroheat is focused on providing long term solutions, not selling mass produced heating or cooling units... it was more cost effective than using other companies selling standardized heat pumps, floor heating and air conditioning units."

Size it first. Then buy it.

Every failure on this page – oversized, undersized, boxed in – is prevented by a calculation before you buy. We calculate the size, the siting and the controls first, then specify the unit and install it. If the heat pump will run a floor or radiators, the Running Cost Calculator shows what that calculation is worth.
